Alfred Mayerhofer

The Austrian costume designer Alfred Mayerhofer has been collaborating on numerous international opera, theater, and ballet productions, as well as on feature films, TV movies, and TV series since 1992.

Alfred Mayerhofer will open the 2024/25 season at the Volksoper Vienna with the world premiere of Alma (director: Ruth Brauer-Kvam). He will then return to the Semperoper Dresden with Intermezzo (director: Axel Ranisch) and to the Gärtnerplatztheater Munich with Carmen and La Cage aux Folles (director: Josef Köpplinger). Further productions this season include: A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Graz Opera, Im weißen Rössl at the Innsbruck Landestheater and Tannhäuser (director: Lydia Steier) at the Vienna State Opera.

Successful productions of the 2023/24 season were: The Magic Flute (directed by Josef J. Köpplinger) and The Bird Seller (directed by Bernd Mottl) at the Gärtnerplatztheater in Munich, Nils Holgersson (directed by Ruth Brauer) and Messeschlager Gisela (directed by Axel Ranisch) at the Komische Oper in Berlin, and The Merry Widow (directed by Bernd Mottl) for the Cologne Opera.

His work is known to a wide television audience through the television series Kafka, for which he received the DAfNE Award for Best Costume Design in February 2025.

Alfred Mayerhofer has been working closely with Lydia Steier since 2013: The Emperor's New Clothes (Komische Oper Berlin), Iolanta – Oedipus Rex (Oper Frankfurt), La Juive, Le nozze di Figaro (Staatsoper Hannover).

Costume design for Cinema and TV: Ich und die Anderen (Series), M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder (Series), Altes Geld (Series), Braunschlag (Series), Murer - Anatomie eines Prozesses (cinema).

Awards for „Best costume“: Gefährliche Liebschaften (Deutscher Musical Theater Preis 2015), Murer - Anatomie eines Prozesses (Österreichischer Filmpreis 2019), Die Reise der Verlorenen (Internationales Theater Festival Rijeka 2019).
