Since his 2009 debut at the Rome Opera as Alfredo in La Traviata, and his 2010 prize at the Operalia competition in Milan, Stefan Pop has been considered among today’s leading lyric tenors. Earlier he had performed the roles of Paulino in Il matrimononio segreto at the Cluj Opera and Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at the Timisoara Opera.
Since then Pop has debuted at many of the world’s most important opera houses, including: Elvino (La Sonnambula) at the Wiener Staatsoper, Nemorino (Elisir d‘ amore) at Royal Opera House Covent Garden London, Staatsoper Hamburg, Opéra de Monte-Carlo Opera Lausanne, and the New Israeli Opera in Tel Aviv. He has also appeared as Duca (Rigoletto) at Opéra Bastille Paris, in Seoul, at Teatro Massimo di Palermo, Teatro Regio di Torino, and Teatro Regio di Parma in Italy, and also at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf-Duisburg. Pop’s further roles include Cassio (Otello) at the Opernhaus Zürich, Alfredo (La Traviata) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin and Wiener Staatsoper; the title role in Faust in Hong Kong, Bucharest and Oviedo; the Italian Tenor in Rosenkavalier at the Salzburger Festspiele; Rodolfo (La Bohème) in Singapore, with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Paris’ Salle Pleyel, and in Italy at the Teatro Regio di Parma and Teatro Massimo di Palermo; Pollione (Norma) at the Teatro Real Madrid, Teatro San Carlo di Napoli, Teatro Carlo Felice Genova, Venice’s Gran Teatro la Fenice, as well as in Tokyo and Osaka. Gabriele Adorno (Simon Boccanegra) and Edgardo (Lucia di Lammermoor) at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna; Roberto Devereux at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova and Teatro Regio di Parma; Don Ottavio (Don Giovanni) at Opéra Bastille Paris and the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad; Foresto (Attila) at the Gran Teatro La Fenice; Warney (Elisabetta al Castello di Kenilworth) at the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo and Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova.
Pop’s upcoming engagements include Pinkerton (Madama Butterfly) at the Festival Torre del Lago; Boheme at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova, I due Foscari at the Verdi Festival in Parma, Lucrezia Borgia at the Teatro Verdi Trieste and at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Hoffmann at the New National Theater Tokyo, as well as Un Ballo in Maschera at the Teatro Carlo Felice di Genova.
He has worked with such conductors as Nello Santi, Daniel Oren, Daniele Gatti, Bruno Campanella, Renato Palumbo, Evelino Pido, Riccardo Frizza, Michele Mariotti, Fabio Luisi, and Zubin Mehta, among others, and has toured to Seoul, Shanghai, and Muscat with Angela Georghiu in concert. In 2019 he won the „Oscar della Lirica Young Generation“ prize.
Born in Bistrita, Romania, Pop completed his studies at the Ghoerge-Dima Music Academy in Cluj-Napoca, after which he won the Hariclea Darclee competition and the International Music Competition Seoul. He has been a Citizen of Honor in the city of his birth since 2015.
