In the season 2017/18 her appearances lead Elza van den Heever to the Oper Frankfurt with Il trovatore (Leonora) and Norma, to the Metropolitan Opera with Elektra (Chrysothemis) and to the Opernhaus Zurich with Fidelio (Leonore), besides concerts in Helsinki and Monte Carlo under the baton of Simone Young. The highlights of the 16/17 are of course the debut at the Wiener Staatsoper as Ellen Orford in Peter Grimes, Norma Productions in Dallas and Toronoto as well as Idomeneo (Elektra) at the Metropolitan Opera, the concert version of Ernani (Elvira) at Oper Frankfurt and Alcina (main role) in Santa Fe.
Besides her concerts with the WDR Symphony Orchestra in Köln, the Beethovenorchester in Bonn and the Yomiuri Symphony Orchestra in Tokio, in 2015/2016 she sang Don Carlos (Elisabeth) in Bordeaux and Strasbourg, as well as Maria Stuarda (Elisabetta) at the MET, Il trittico (Giorgetta) at the Frankfurt Opera and Fidelio (Leonore) at the Caramoor Festival. In the 14/15 season she made her debut in Norma (title role) at the Opéra National de Bordeaux.
In 2013/2014 she made her brilliant debut at the English National Opera as Ellen/Peter Grimes, which she also sang in San Francisco. During the 2012/13 season she gave her role debuts as Elisabetta/Maria Stuarda and as Elektra/Idomeneo at the Frankfurt Opera. The Duchess Hélène in The Sicilian Vespers followed. That very same season she also made her house debut as Elisabetta/Maria Stuarda at the Metropolitan Opera, to which she returned in 2014/15 as Donna Anna/Don Giovanni.
Elza van den Heever was an ensemble member of the Frankfurt Opera from the 2008/09 until the 2012/13 season (Desdemona/Otello, Antonia/Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Elisabeth de Valois/Don Carlo, Elsa of Brabant/Lohengrin, Anna Bolena in the title role in concert format, Vitellia/La clemenza di Tito), after her brilliant debut as Giorgetta in Puccini’s Il trittico. Since then, she has been one of the most demanded sopranos of her generation.
During her career Elza van den Heever has already sung at many leading opera houses such as the Bavarian State Opera in Munich (Lohengrin, Don Giovanni), the Hamburg State Opera (Don Giovanni, I Lombardi), the Opéra National de Paris (Così fan tutte), the Opéra National de Bordeaux (Ariadne auf Naxos, Il Trovatore, Alcina, Anna Bolena), the Zurich Opera (Lohengrin), the Theater an der Wien (Der Freischütz), the Vienna Konzerthaus (Il tabarro in concert format under the baton of Bertrand de Billy), the Dallas Opera (Così fan tutte) and the Lyric Opera of Chicago (Rinaldo), as well as the Canadian Opera in Toronto (Il Trovatore).
Elza van den Heever was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is now a French citizen and lives in Bordeaux. Her first major role was Donna Anna (Don Giovanni), which she sang in 2007 at the San Francisco Opera. Elza van den Heever was a finalist in the 2003 Pacific Regional Metropolitan National Council Auditions and winner of the International Wagner Competition of the Seattle Opera in 2008.
