Biography

The British bass-baritone Iain Paterson is one of the most distinguished Wagner interpreters of his generation.

In the 2025/26 season, he returns to the Opéra National de Paris as Wotan, where he will complete the Ring cycle with Die Walküre and Siegfried. He will also appear as Orest in Elektra at the Bavarian State Opera and once again as Wotan in Das Rheingold and Siegfried at the Deutsche Oper Berlin. Further concert appearances will take him, among others, to Radio France.

  • His repertoire encompasses key roles such as Wotan/Wanderer, the Flying Dutchman, Kurwenal, Amfortas (Parsifal), Jochanaan, Orest, Balstrode, and the Forester in Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen.

He appears regularly at major opera houses including the Vienna State Opera, the Bavarian State Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Berlin State Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Opéra National de Paris, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, and English National Opera, where he developed many of the central roles in his repertoire. His portrayal of Leontes in the world premiere of Ryan Wigglesworth’s The Winter’s Tale demonstrated his exceptional artistic versatility.

Paterson has appeared several times at the Bayreuth Festival, most recently as Kurwenal (Tristan und Isolde) under Christian Thielemann and as Wotan (Das Rheingold) under Marek Janowski. On the concert platform, he has performed Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the BBC Philharmonic, as well as Elgar’s The Dream of Gerontius at the Edinburgh Festival.

He works regularly with conductors including Daniel Barenboim, Christian Thielemann, Sir Antonio Pappano, Sir Simon Rattle, Andris Nelsons, Edward Gardner, and Vasily Petrenko. Iain Paterson studied singing at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama with Neilson Taylor.
