Andrea Bönig

Andrea Bönig, born in Bamberg, received her musical education in Berlin, Basel and at the Münchner Singschul’.

She made her stage debut as Dryade in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Gran Teatro del Liceu in Barcelona, to where she returned for a new production of the RING DES NIBELUNGEN.

From 1995 – 1997 she was ensemble member of Staatsoper Berlin. After that she returned as a regular guest in roles like Erda (Siegfried), Maddalena (Rigoletto) as well as in Rheingold, Götterdämmerung, Elektra, Wozzeck, as Hänsel (Hänsel and Gretel) and the Gymnasiast in Lulu.

At the Bayreuth Festival the alto made her debut in 1996 with Walküre (J. Levine) and Parsifal (G. Sinopoli). In spring 1997 she made her debut as Erda at the Vienna State Opera, where she joined the ensemble from 1997 – 1999 and sang all roles of her repertoire including Der Fliegende Holländer, Meistersinger, the Ring, Parsifal, Salome and Ariadne as well as Le Nozze di Figaro, Les Contes d’ Hoffmann and Otello. She was also participant of the first guest tour to China.

As member of the ensemble of the Vienna Volksoper from 2003 – 2008 she performed in many new productions and repertoire performances, like Sommernachtstraum, Boris Godunow, Martha, Die Ausflüge des Herrn Broucek, and roles such as Hänsel, Prinz Orlofsky (Fledermaus), Stimme der Mutter (Les Contes d’ Hoffmann), Magdalene (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg) and gave her successful debut as Magdalena (Evangelimann).

Guest engagements have led her to Bonn, Dessau, Teatro alla Scala in Milano, Rome, the Salzburg Easter-Festival, to Taiwan and Tokyo, to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, to the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Oper Berlin, to Catania, the Maggio Musicale and to the Chatelet in Paris. Furthermore, she was a guest of the Nederlandse Opera Amsterdam and the Theater Meiningen, where she participated in the internationally acclaimed Ring production (by Christine Mielitz), in which she made her role debuts as Fricka and Waltraute. She worked with renowned conductors such as F. Welser-Möst, S. Young, J. Levine, G. Sinopoli, K. Petrenko, H. Haenchen, D. Barenboim, C. Abbado, J. Jones, B. de Billy and S. Weigle.

Andrea Bönig appeares regularly in recitals and concerts. She has been performing a wide repertoire in Europe, America and Asia, including passions by Bach, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, Mahler’s Symphonies, Elgar’s Sea-Pictures and Verdi’s Requiem.

Several recordings and DVDs (i.e. Lulu/Oper Zürich, Rheingold, Walküre, Siegfried/ Liceu Barcelona) are available.
